Kata Beach - Phuket

This idyllic beach boasts white sand, crystal clear water and swaying palm trees. November to April attracts families and sun seekers; May to October brings large waves and surfers from far and wide.

Kata Beach is Phuket’s second most popular beach after Patong, though its noticeably quieter. Catering to families, couples and sun-worshippers there are no go-go bars here.

The picture-perfect beach stretches for around 1.5km with amazing views over the deep blue Andaman sea. The water is calm during high season making it perfect for swimming and stand up paddle boarding. A small island lies off the northern end of the beach that is great for snorkelling, kayaking and scuba diving. Beach vendors offer ice-cream, fruit and beachwear.

Often considered the best surfing in Phuket, in low season the waves are typically fast but manageable. Most board rental and surf schools are found at the southern end of the beach where the waves are gentler. Flags are flown to indicate whether swimming or surfing is safe as there are several dangerous rips in low season.

In December the bay fills up with yachts arriving to compete in the prestigious King’s Cup Regatta.

Kata beach has an impressive range of dining options, from basic street food to fine dining. There is a cluster of shops to explore, offering all kinds of souvenirs, convenience stores and branded fashion. Nightlife is in the centre of Kata, near the main intersection. Beer bars, nightclubs and music venues last late into the night. There are plenty of places to eat around there too.

Accommodation varies from small guesthouses to large family-friendly complexes and luxurious beachfront resorts.
